Quickie

I really don’t know where the time has gone, so it’s with good reason that I can’t really figure out what I’ve done with it. Life updates aside, the new issue of Ride came out with Dennis Enarson’s interview and he got the cover with this nutso truck off a container. I guess I’m supposed to put these things up here when they happen, yeah? That’s the point of having a portfolio site, right? Hey, I shot a cover. In all honestly, I was pretty psyched when we shot this just because of the overall look of the photo complimented how crazy the trick was. As it goes, though, you can’t run a horizontal photo on the cover, so it got the heavy crop job. Fortunately, the full sequence, un-cropped, runs in the issue, so please feel free to pick one up or buy a subscription. Feed me.

Friendly Reminder

Sometimes I’m reminded why I’m better behind the camera than in front of it. Nothing more refreshing than a Monday afternoon headplant, haha.

Things That Start With B

Bees. I just got done telling this story in person, but we’ve had a bee hive on the side of our house for a couple weeks. We had a guy come check it out and he told my girl that there were somewhere between 30k-50k bees in the hive. It actually wasn’t that much of a hassle, but the few times I had to run along the pathway during the day was definitely slightly nerve-racking. The same dude came back about a week later to remove the hive at about 7:30am. I had to go to the office before he really got into the hive, but I did manage to snap a couple photos of him snapping a couple photos for himself. Sort of a bummer that they had to be killed, but I guess that’s how it goes.

BMW. Still working on it, obviously. I had to rent an engine lift for the weekend, which may end up being a blessing in the end since I now have a Monday deadline to get the new engine in. I did overly clean the new (to me) engine, am working on getting rid of 30+ years of oil and road grime in the engine bay so I can sand and respray the engine bay, and who knows what else I decide to do. I did decide to pull out the transmission for some reason tonight. No real idea why…definitely making a lot more work for myself in the end.

Other notable B’s within the last few days: bikes, beers, and boobs.

Web…site?

July 13th, 2010

Okay, so I’ve had this website for a year and somehow managed to purposely keep it under wraps. I always felt weird about it for some reason and the last design was home-brewed and pretty whatever. But, what you’re seeing now is redesigned version, courtesy of my good friend Francis Delapena, who’s work you’re surely already familiar with if you ride BMX. I’m not trying to do any sort of formal introduction or explain much of anything, because what you see is what you get. Just another portfolio site for whatever reason…

My only advice is that you don’t enter the Konami Contra secret code…this is the price you pay when you have your friend create your website in exchange for car work, I guess.

Red Bull Illume

July 13th, 2010

As this screen shot was uploading, I got a little nervous about what other tabs would be open. Who know’s why I was googling Zack “Catfish” Yankush’s name—probably to make sure I had his last name spelled right—but it’s beyond the point. The Red Bull Illume contest is something I reveered since it first came about in 2007. Back in ’07, I only submitted about seven photos on the last eligible day. This year, I took all the photos I was into (many are on this site) and tried to squeeze them into “catagories” that the contest required. They just released the 250 semi-finalist photos on the site and it’s really awesome to see that, one, BMX is extra-represented, and two, that beyond my own photos, that Jeff Zielinski, my roommate Francis Delapena, and coworker Fattony have photos in there. Pretty awesome to have a little epicenter of BMX-photography get recognized in Long Beach…even if it is “annonymous.” I hate to curse myself, so I’ll leave it at that.

My girlfriend dictated that we should go down to Mexico for the weekend. I had a ton to do (and still do), but I was in. Short weekend in a few words: we camped on a cliff over looking the beach one night, slept on the beach the next, ate a lot, lived a lot, saw a lot, got to second level in the border search game, and drove 500 miles. I didn’t shoot many photos outside of the first camping spot…mostly due to boredom…but you can’t not have someone snap a photo of you holding a baby tiger. That’s a legit smile out of me.

A talk with Nuno Olivera today about what this blog should be sort of sparked the idea to try to keep it updated with whatever sort of banter I’m doing/part of. As you’ll come to learn, a lot of that involves cars. Not really by choice, as I’ve really been not into geeking-out and working-on cars the last six or so months. But, I feel like I have really bad luck with cars. Although, it may not be luck, as I’ve been known to take things apart for no reason and to try to make things better without really knowning what I’m doing. A credit I give to BMX as I learned at a very young age that there’s not much consequence in taking something apart—it’ll always comes back together in the end. With cars, though, it’s a little more involved. My 1972 BMW 2002 has had a tick since the day I bought it, but I could never sort it out. I made it run better and it sounded the same. I made it drive the best it ever has and it sounded worse, then on the way home one day, the tick developed into the literal sound of a ticking time bomb. Long story short, it ended up being a worn wrist pin, so I have to throw a new motor in it. Unfortunately, I have to deal with my spotty-OCD, where I’m compelled to remove an oil pan, clean it of oil, put it back on, and fill it with oil again. Could be a moment before it’s running…

Last Weekend.

July 6th, 2010

A weekend with the Subrosa crew is a life lesson in learning to chill out. And I’m already pretty good at chilling out. Constant entertainment from Friday to Sunday courtesy of Hoang Tran, Kyle Hart, Drew York, Miles Rogoish, and Lahsaan Kobza. Drew tips his 5pm forty to the camera about two hours before a drunk woman by the name of Cookie tries to punch my car window out.

Words.

Site has pretty much been done for a bit, but I’ve been indecisive about what to post here. Might as well start it off with something negative to break the seal, eh?
